Bolton site revamp planned for Barton Grange

Barton Grange managing director Guy Topping is to revamp his Bolton centre to shrink the garden element and increase the size of the catering and add a farm shop.

The centre was built in 1990 on a former colliery site and has a restaurant called Colliers Kitchen.

He said the main site at Brock in Lancashire had done well this year, picking up in summer after a post-spring lull. "We are a destination place so the holidays are a busy time. We are eight per cent up year to date and catering and farm shop more than that."

But Bolton has been squeezed for 10-12 years, Topping added. "We are competing with ourselves at Brock and are also near Bents and the Trafford Centre."

Barton Grange won the American Garden Centres best bathroom of the year award announced in Chicago recently.

Meanwhile, the retirement of Stephen H Smith has prompted the sale of his garden centre in Bolton, one of his group's four sites.
