Bishop oversees street tree talks between Sheffield council and campaigners

Representatives of Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Trees Action Group (STAG) have begun mediated talks, overseen by the Bishop of Sheffield, the Very Reverend Dr Pete Wilcox, in an effort to resolve the long-running dispute over the council's street tree replacement programme.

Initial talks are due to take place with the Council's delegation to include elected members, council officers and representatives from the programme's main contractor Amey.

The delegation from STAG includes a representative of urban greening charity Trees for Cities.

A joint statement yesterday (26 September) from STAG co-chairs Chris Rust and Paul Brooke, and Councillor Lewis Dagnall, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for environment and streetscene, said: "Mediation is a process in which a neutral and independent person, agreed by both sides, actively assists parties to resolve a dispute.

"Mediation requires that all parties sign up to an agreement covering behaviour and confidentiality during the process. The Council and STAG have agreed that we will issue joint statements when progress is made, but both parties now request that we are allowed time to work through the issues before us."
