Bernhard & Co lawn mower grinder milestone celebrated at BTME

Blade sharpening systems manufacturer Bernhard & Co celebrated the 125th anniversary of the first grinder patent at BTME in Harrogate.

Brainchild of English engineer and Bernhard & Co forefather John Atterton, the submission illustrates the first ‘spin’ grinder for lawn mower cylinders that also sharpens bottom blades while still mounted to bed bars.

He established Atterton & Ellis in Haverhill and the company manufactured grinding machines for nearly a century.

In the 1980s a controlling interest was purchased by Stephen Bernhard and rebranded Bernhard & Co.

Executive chairman Stephen Bernhard said: "Atterton’s main shaft, grindstone mounting, drive and guidance principles are used in our Express Dual models to this day.

It is a testament to his genius that the technology and underlying philosophy of operational simplicity remain a Bernhard calling card in 2014."
