Landscape architecture director: Mehron Kirk
Tell me about your key goals/priorities as a business for 2019.
It has to be building on the success of our current projects and further strengthening our design. We are busier than we have ever been, so are not looking to move into new markets. But we do want to do what already do even better. One of our biggest projects, the parliamentary estate, will be starting to happen and that will demand a lot of time and effort in 2019.
What do you feel will be the biggest challenge for you as a business (or for your sector) in 2019 – and why?
We are very busy and going from strength to strength, so maintaining quality will be a challenge. This is especially so as we are struggling with recruitment and want to ensure the right people come on board. But there is a skills drain and the issue of who is coming through the system is a big question mark. Brexit isn't helping.
What do you regard as the biggest opportunity for you as a business (or for your sector) in 2019 – and why?
The Houses of Parliament is an amazing opportunity, meanwhile we have won lots of work in London from some of the big estates and work is taking off internationally – we must be doing something right, so building on that is our biggest opportunity. We have to analyse all our project openings and take on the right ones to maintain our position as an award-winning landscape architecture firm.
What was the best thing about winning a Horticulture Week Business Award for you as a business?
It's always good to win recognition for the team, especially in a multidisciplinary practice: when we bring an award back to the office, all the architects get to know about it and it gives our team and the profession some welcome kudos. Our landscape architects work very hard and are enthusiastic and motivated, so this award is well deserved, and the best form of recognition.
