Barcham adopts tree bio-security code

Barcham Trees has published a commitment to bio-security in response to concern over tree diseases arriving on imported nursery stock.

The Cambridgeshire nursery has pledged not to import trees for direct sale to end-users, but rather to hold them on the nursery for a full growing season, during which time they are inspected regularly for pests and diseases.

It has also committed to full traceability of all imported trees, which can then be recalled in the event of a subsequent pest or disease outbreak.

Sales director Keith Sacre said: "It cannot just be left to the authorities to take a lead on bio-security - it requires companies and individuals to take responsibility.

"Our policy is taken voluntarily and at significant financial cost, but we know it is the right thing to do."
