Ball Colegrave axes staff

Seed company makes 12 redundant

Oxfordshire-based young plant and seed company Ball Colegrave has made 12 staff redundant. They include finance director Christine Caffrey, a sales manager, a marketing assistant and nine despatch workers. Most of the posts will become seasonal jobs. Managing director Sandy Shepherd said: “As any good business would do, you review things. Everyone has a look at their business whether you’re trading well or not.” He added that the seasonality of horticulture is a challenge and “if that lends itself to working temporary contracts we’ll do that”. He added that Ball made the redundancies because it had bought new technology and could now absorb the redundant finance and sales roles into its European operations. Shepherd said he planned no further redundancies and that the company would now be stronger. Company profits dropped by £542,000 in the year to September 2004 to £837,000 on level turnover of £23.5m. The David Colegrave Group merged with US-based multinational seeds and plant company Ball Horticulture in 2001.
