Associations join to build garden

Two landscape associations are forming a “super team” hoping to showcase perfect harmony between designers and builders and win a major award.

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) and the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) launched a competition for a design themed on “the traveller’s garden” for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. A member or team from SGD will be chosen to work with a crew of specialist builders picked from APL. “I imagine the garden will be evocative of trips to foreign climbs and hunting for exotic plants and odd artefacts,” said SGD chairman Peter Thomas. “We want to raise the profile of both groups, but also give the opportunity for members to tackle a show garden.” He added: “[Show gardens] are so prestigious and limiting because budgets are out of the scope for people to finance themselves. Design is often not the issue, sponsorship is the problem.” Paving firm Bradstone will sponsor the garden at Hampton Court in East Molesey, Surrey on 8-13 July 2008. The budget will be £25,000. Thomas said: “We hope to win an award, but the important thing is to create a beautiful garden. Success will be measured by us on the quality of construction and how well it is received by the visitors.” APL chairman James Steele-Sargent said: “Designer-contractor relationships can be fraught with misinterpretation and problems but this is a designer-meets-builder exercise promoting good relations.
