April trade 3% up on March, according to GCA figures

Early indications from the Garden Centre Association (GCA) have shown that April 2010 trade was3% up on April 2009.

Figures from 11 centres showed that outdoor plants and catering had held their own, while sundries were up.

GCA chief executive Gillie Westwood said: "Sales are catching up. Garden centres had an appalling March but April has helped them recover. Considering April 2009 was the best ever that has to be pretty good. But May has not started very well for many."

Catering Up 1 per cent Up 0.5 per cent
Hard landscaping Down 4 per cent Down 13 per cent
Overall Up 3 per cent Down 2 per cent
