Alton Garden Centre's Andy Bunker urges collaboration to boost sales

Breeders, growers and retailers should work together more to increase plant sales, says Alton Garden Centre director Andy Bunker.

He told the British Protected Ornamentals Association's Growers Look Ahead conference that all parts of the supply chain had to be involved and suggested a working group to bring representatives from each part of the chain together:

"Breeders can breed a great plant, growers can grow a great plant but if you can't sell it to the consumer there is no result. We need to work together. We should pool resources and use images from breeders and growers for point of sale."

Bunker recently visited German breeders Kientzler, Selecta and Dummen: "I counted 214 petunia varieties there. Breeders need to talk to us to see if we've fallen out of love with something. I saw lots of trailing begonias at the breeders I visited but I haven't seen those in the UK."
