Alex Smith, London leader of sustainability, London mayor

Alex Smith has been appointed by London mayor Boris Johnson as a London leader of sustainability.

Smith founded the company Alara Wholefoods in 1975 by collecting unsold food from New Covent Garden Market and using it to make organic muesli. The firm now has a turnover of more than £4m, selling almost 200 varieties to retailers including Tesco and Waitrose. His role will involve talking to companies about how to reduce their waste and create "market gardens" on unused land.
