Alan Titchmarsh beats Monty Don in TV gardener ratings

Alan Titchmarsh has beaten Monty Don in the ratings battle of the television gardeners.

Alan Titchmarsh's new ITV 1 show Love Your Garden attracted almost double the number of viewers of Monty Don’s Hampton Court Flower Show Gardeners’ World special.

While Titchmarsh’s show attracted 3.13m in the same week, a special edition of BBC 2 show Gardeners' World, once presented by Titchmarsh but now presented by Don, was watched by 1.61m. July 10’s LYG attracted 3.17m, while Gardeners’ World was replaced by athletics TV coverage on July 13.

Don hosted three half hour shows in a week from Hampton Court, where public visitors were slightly below last year’s 160,000, but none topped two million viewers.

The regular Gardeners’ World series was taking a four-week break because of snooker, tennis and athletics. It returned on 20 July.
