This week's guest on the Horticulture Week podcast, Desch Plantpak, was an early adopter of using recycled materials in their plastic products. In common with many horticultural businesses this season, the firm is enjoying the 'problem' of unprecedented demand for its thermoformed pots and containers, transport trays, seedling trays, transplant trays and bedding packs.
"It's ironic ... in the dim and distant past [people said] 'Oh, you don't want to buy parts from [formerly] Plantpak, there's too much recycled material in there' UK and Ireland sales manager Phil Griffiths reflects.
Having decisively won the argument, CEO Jan Willem Wieringa is candid about the challenges of increased demand as the plant trade booms Europe-wide during lockdown.
Hear Wieringa, Griffiths and marketing director Wouter Zieck discuss the direction the industry is going in, hopes for improvements in recycling of horticultural plastics, current challenges managing supply and demand and future opportunities with HW editor Matthew Appleby.
