5 July - Weevil control

Vine weevil: Control feeding adults using chlorpyrifos, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Steward on foliage of ornamental plants, applied late afternoon. Some products take 14 days before achieving full control.

Spraying: Avoid spraying emulsifiable concentrates onto soft foliage before, during and after warm, sunny conditions to prevent foliar scorch. Examples include Corbel, Decis, Dynamec, Equity, Nimrod and Sumi-Alpha.

Mealy bug: Focus sprays on phormiums and others. Control with drenches of chlorpyrifos or Intercept 70WG, or directed sprays using Chess WG (EAMU 2013-1434), Decis, Gazelle SG, Pyrethrum 5EC, Savona or SB Plant Invigorator.

Whitefly: Check black scale numbers if you are using Encarsia. Use Lavatera banker plants where a steady population of pests and predators can exist, acting as a predator springboard onto vulnerable crops. Predator-friendly products include Chess WG (EAMU 2013-1434), Eradicoat, Majestik, Mycotal, Naturalis-L, Oberon (EAMU 2004-1718), Pyrethrum 5EC, Savona or SB Plant Invigorator.

Caterpillars: Predator-friendly products include Dimilin Flo, Dipel DF, Insegar WG and Runner (EAMUs required). Other products available include Decis, Dursban WG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Majestik, Pyrethrum 5EC, Steward, Toppel 100 and Tracer (EAMU 2008-2908).

Rust: Check birch, dianthus, heuchera, hypericum, mahonia, hollyhock, vinca, Salix, roses and others. Control with Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Bumper 250EC (EAMUs required), Cuprokylt, Difcor 250EC (EAMUs required), Fandango (EAMU 2009-0226), Folicur, Nimrod, Plover (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141), Thianosan DG or Systhane 20EW.

Thrips: For protected crops, apply Amblyseius cucumeris at 100 per square metre (high rate) along with Conserve (plus Attracker), Dynamec, Naturalis-L, Pyrethrum 5EC or Savona. Predators may need to be reintroduced after spraying. Non-IPM sprays include Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Toppel 100.

Shot-hole: In wet weather, or with overhead irrigation, apply a tank mix of Cuprokylt, Serenade ASO (EAMUs required) and a wetting agent to control bacterial infections on ornamental prunus, Philadephus and magnolias.
