Spraying windows Spraying can often be difficult with changeable weather and heavy showers. Consider adding products such as Addit, Celect or Codacide Oil that can improve the rain-fast nature of products. Do not add to emulsifiable concentrates and products such as Amistar, which has specific details on its extension of authorisation for minor uses to not include an adjuvant.
Apple and pear sucker - Insects are often spotted by finding sooty mould on leaves and stems. Control pests with Dimilin Flo, Hallmark WZT (EoA 2008-2944) or Toppel 100EC at this time of year when fruit is present according to label recommendations. Sooty mould can be controlled on outdoor crops using Fandango (EoA 2009-0226, forest nurseries only), Octave, Bumper 250EC (EoAs required) or products containing tebuconazole.
Again, check EoAs and labels for the latest times of application and harvest intervals.
Feeding - Green-up outdoor crops that have been subject to heavy rain by top dressing with slow release products such as Floranid Permanent or Osmocote Topdress NT.
Growth - Root growth has not kept up with foliage development this season. Make sure that plants are not water stressed during this key establishment phase. An anti-transpirant applied to foliage can help to reduce unnecessary scorch and drought damage on leaves.
Encourage rooting by applying products high in phosphate such as Peters Plant Starter 10/52/10 or Universol Yellow, Solufeed 1:5:1 or Hortimix 10/52/10.
Hedge cutting - The deadline of 31 July has now passed.
Sap - Periods of warm, sunny weather can cause allergic skin reactions on some staff to sap - Euphorbia and Ruta are particularly noted for causing skin blisters when sap and UV combine. Staff who do not speak much English would benefit from warning signs next to crops that are high risk.
Downy mildew - Maintain preventive sprays using Bravo 500 (EoA 2011-1130), Filex or Proplant. Warm, dry weather will reduce disease incidence but if it is still present, consider using Aliette 80WG, Amistar (EoA 2009-0443), Fubol Gold WG (EoA 2012-0217), Invader (EoA 2012-0109), Paraat (EoA 2011-2585), Pergado Uni (EoA 2012-1605), Revus (EoA 2008-2867), Standon Fullstop, Stroby WG, Subdue or Valbon (EoAs required).
