How did you get started in the industry? Originally I studied architecture and through connections at university I started working as an urban design and landscape design assistant. I was eager to work full-time and move back to Dorset, and get my teeth into some interesting design projects.
What advice would you give to others starting out? Always sign up to interesting opportunities and continue to gain skills in evening or weekend courses. It’s hard to receive rejections but always persevere and pursue your passions. Work hard on your design and computer skills.
What does your typical day involve? Every day is completely different, but it always starts with a friendly catch up with the team and checking emails.
What is the best aspect of your job? The team at JPS is brilliant — always there to encourage one another. The knowledge and creativity everyone has always pushes each of us to learn and excel. I really enjoy working on large public design schemes and small-scale play areas while considering the urban and rural environments. It is great fun working on site and planting our designs.
And the worst? The small studio, but this is shortly being resolved when we move in early April into our new premises in Parkstone. One of the best bits will be our dedicated creative room.
What have you been working on recently? Stapehill Abbey, a 54-acre site in Wimborne. We have designed the new residential as well as a rustic areas. I have also been working on a couple of specifications for our private residential projects.
What has been your biggest achievement at work? Gaining confidence with clients and in the workplace. It is my first full-time job and I have learnt so much already.
How do you unwind after a hard day at work? On the weekends my favourite thing is to cycle along the Dorset heathlands and appreciate the landscape.
