Yorkshire showcase garden comes home to Wakefield

Wakefield Council opened Jubilee Gardens last week, a showcase landscape by Gillespies.

A main focal point of the design is a recreation of last year’s Chelsea Flower show entry and a sculpture by David Appleyard and Robin Dobson in the shape of a question mark.

Tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire commissioned Gillespies to design a garden to showcase Yorkshire at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden, installed by Aire Valley, went on to win a silver medal and the people’s choice award.

Deputy Leader of the council Denise Jeffery said: "We are creating a lasting tribute to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this year. Welcome to Yorkshire has recognised our arts heritage by giving this garden to Wakefield."

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity: "The garden captured the imagination of the public at Chelsea and I am sure it will continue to inspire visitors to Wakefield to seek out its cultural heritage and celebrate its artistic excellence."
