Year of the Cosmos draws new varieties from Mr Fothergill's

Cosmos will be celebrated in the 'Year of the Cosmos' declared by Fleuroselect, the organisation which trials and assesses new seed varieties from around the world to determine their suitability for European conditions.

Suffolk seedsman Mr Fothergill's is celebrating the initiative with the launch of a clutch of new varieties and special display unit highlighting 15 varieties in garden centres and other retailers throughout the country.

Among new introductions is the exclusive-to-Mr Fothergill's Hummingbird Pink, which grows smaller than most cosmos at just 45cm (18in), making it suitable for containers as well as borders. A packet of seed sufficient for 20 plants costs £2.15. It is joined by the similarly priced Hummingbird White.

Other new cosmos being introduced by Mr Fothergill's for 2016 are Xanthos, Tetra Versailles Dark Rose and Tetra Versailles Flush. Xanthos (£2.15 for seed for 20 plants) is the first yellow-flowered Cosmos bipinnatus, while Tetra Versailles Dark Rose and Flush (both £2.15 for seed for 60 plants) complete the new plants.
