Wyevale Garden Centres is making 66 head-office staff, including buying director Glyn Price, redundant in a bid to save £1.5m.
The chain plans to use its Hereford head office as a finance/IT centre and to open a marketing/ buying/retail centre, possibly in Slough. It will cut staff numbers from 159 to 93 by Easter. All head-office staff will need to re-apply for their jobs.
Chairman Jim Hodkinson said the decision was “difficult but necessary”. He explained: “We are operating in a challenging retail environment and this will help us deliver a more competitive service to our customers while keeping a tight control on our cost base.”
Laxey Partners took control of the business last month after a prolonged wrangle which saw chairman David Williams leave. Writer Peter Seabrook said previous chairman Brian Evans was renowned for “running a tight ship” and the move seemed “not to make any sense”.
