"We used to think we were cool knowing Merlot from Shiraz but now we know if it's an Australian or South African Shiraz," he said: "Now the same is happening in coffee. We're getting coffees of the month with 50p price premiums."
Stewart said Deepdale Garden Centre in Barton on Humber and Summerseat and Bradleyfold Garden Centres are leading the way. He added: "The catering market is dividing and splitting. Old garden centre customers want steak pie and chips but younger ones want patisserie. So it's not just two catering offers to reduce queues, buy two catering offers to serve different customers."
Catering sales were up 11.78 per cent in March according to the GCA, 16.48 per cent up in February and were 10 per cent up in the whole of 2015. Catering was up 8.7 per cent in 2014.
