Work begins on Swindon square

Work has started on Wharf Green to deliver a high-quality new town square at the heart of Swindon’s retail centre.

The site has been redesigned by LDA Design and is the first of the many public-realm schemes planned to regenerate Swindon. LDA Design partner Bernie Foulkes said: “Wharf Green has the potential to benchmark quality and be a major catalyst for change. Swindon is located in a pivotal position with excellent employment opportunities and great surroundings — our aim is to create fantastic places to encourage more people to enjoy the town centre and retail areas.” Key components of the design are the first BBC Big Screen in the South of England (a giant hi-tech video screen), a large-scale architectural timber façade to screen the existing multi-storey car park, refreshment kiosks and trees and contemporary furniture. Subtle design details will allude to a lost waterway that used to pass through the area, and new lighting will be installed to improve the appearance and security at night. The scheme is due to be completed in spring 2008.
