When is a tachograph required?

Information relating to this is in the Community Drivers' Hours & Recording Equipment Regulations 1986. They apply to vehicles used for commercial purpose and having a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of more than 3,500kg or vehicles and trailers combining to give a MAM of more than 3,500kg.

There are a lot of exemptions, such as tractors used exclusively for agriculture or forestry and vehicles used by airport authorities where they remain wholly within the confines of the airport.

For a full list, refer to the latest issues of the Joint Department for Transport and Vehicle & Operator Services Agency free publication Drivers' Hours & Tachograph Rules for Goods Vehicles in the UK & Europe. If you find you require a tachograph, contact the vehicle manufacturer for more information.
