Waitrose sees strong sales as garden centres break records

Garden retailers are seeing a strong May come back after a tough April.

John Lewis saw strong growth on the year with total sales +£75.5m, +6.1 per cent year on year. The improving weather drove Outdoor Living product sales which were +11.9 per cent.

HTA chief executive Carol Paris said: "Trade has picked up now. It started cold and wet but now it's looking much better."

Glendoick's Ken Cox said: "Trade has picked up last two weeks. We had our best ever weekend two weeks ago thanks to kind weather and pent up demand."

Hillier Garden Centres over £1m in a week for the first time ever earlier this month.

GCA figures show sales are 2.19 per cent year to date but were 10 per cent down in April.

Crocus co-founder Clay said Crocus is no longer fulfilling the Daily Telegraph’s online offer, with Hayloft replacing it. Clay said: "We wanted to concentrate on those seeing enormous growth potential – the RHS and Waitrose have seen phenomenal growth as has our own site. We’re up by more than five per cent on 2015.
