UK landscape management professionals "can learn from French tree charter"

The Greater Lyon Authority has made its ground-breaking Tree Charter available in English.

Described as a partnership-building tool to enhance the long-term management of trees across France's third largest city, the charter sets out common principles, a rationale for action and ideas for implementation for a wide audience.

So far, over 100 local and national stakeholders, including Greater Lyon's 59 boroughs, utility companies, the French equivalent of the UK's Landscape Institute, and tree nurseries have signed the Charter, committing themselves to adhere to its principles and to develop their own action plan for implementation.

The Greater Lyon Authority said it had taken the step of translating the work "in response to demand from foreign authorities and professionals".

The document is also available to download for free from the website of the Trees & Design Action Group, which describes the charter as "highly relevant and directly applicable to the management of trees in towns and cities on this side of the Channel".
