UK-grown food falls within MRL

An ongoing pesticide monitoring programme has shown that nearly 100 per cent of UK produce falls well within maximum residue levels (MRLs).

The latest report from Defra's Pesticide Residues Committee found that 547 of 749 samples of different foods had no detectable residues and 207 contained levels below the maximum level.

Just five samples (0.7 per cent) contained residues above the maximum, though the committee reported these were likely to cause no concern to people's health.

- EU harmonisation of MRLs came closer this month with the announcement of three key annexes of EU regulation 396/2005/EC that fix pan-EU harmonised MRLs on fresh produce.
