In response to these unprecedented changes, Horticulture Week will be hosting a special industry event on 26 February 2015 called The Garden Retail Supply Chain Summit.
Chaired by Horticulture Week’s editors and industry contributors, the supply chain summit will investigate the key drivers of change from omni-channel retailing and the growth of high street garden retail, to plant supply post the difficult 2012 and early 2013 seasons and the rapidly expanding product supply base.
More than that, the summit will also assess just how these drivers are shaping the industry of tomorrow and ask what actions garden industry professionals — whether suppliers or buyers — who are impacted by the changes should be taking right now.

Supplying the consumer — new routes to market
While traditional garden centres arguably have been hit less severely than their high street counterparts by the twin pressures of the recession and internet shopping, since the economy has returned to growth the challenge from rival players seeking to attract a share of the garden market has continued to grow.
In this session we look at how online garden retailers see the future of the industry, the growth of supermarket and high street activity in the garden sector and more.
Presentations will include a look at the omni-channel opportunity for garden centres including examples of how traditional outlets are implementing services such as "click and collect". We will also hear from one leading web-based garden industry player on supporting and inspiring customers online, plus their take on what these new routes to market mean for the industry.
Also exploring the theme of new routes to market will be our panel-based debate with leading players from the garden centre world on the growth of high street gardening and what it means for the sector. Will high street stores grow the customer base or challenge centres? How can garden centres respond to this increased competition?
Supplying the planteria
During the exceptionally poor 2012 garden industry season, and the much delayed start to the 2013 season, agreements between ornamental plant growers and their retail customers were frequently subject to cancellation and renegotiation, leading to tensions in the plant supply chain.
In 2014, a cautious market followed with under-ordering leading to concerns about potential shortages in plant supply. Meanwhile, the erosion of the traditional garden centre customer, a fall in homeownership and growing demand for instant impact from plants are throwing question marks over traditional plant lines.
Our panel of leading plant buyers and suppliers will discuss how growers and retailers can resolve their tensions, whether contracts for plant supply will work better for growers and plant suppliers, how buyers and suppliers can best work together to meet customers’ changing requirements and more.
Supplying the store
Our final theme examines the huge changes that have taken place over the past 12 months in the garden product supply base.
Following a period of consolidation, the market saw the launch of Crest Garden backed by Westland, the rapid expansion of Smart Solar under Paris Natar, a big push into the sector by Decco and Scotts taking on many of the brands of the former distribution giant Solus.
Our panel of leading suppliers and buyers will look at what is driving these changes in the supply base, how they might be resolved and what they could mean for garden retail customers.
