A Teso spokesperson tweeted to a question on why the Saltire has been replaced with a Union Jack on packaging: "Hi Eileen, over the past year, we received several customer complaints regarding Scottish flags on strawberries in England.
"Customers in Scotland will be allocated with Scottish fruit and this is visible.
"When the packaging went through a corporate redesign it was decided to have British packaging only to avoid further criticism.
"English customers criticised us why we do not have the English flag on English berries and why we do have on Scottish berries."
Nationalists and others have expressed Twitter outrage over the issue. Scotland held an unsuccessful vote on independence in 2014.
Eileen Brown tweeted: "What have Scottish fruit farmers done to make English hate them?"
