Tesco holds onto Dobbies garden centres

Tesco plans to increase the footprint of its Dobbies Garden Centres subsidiary according to a preliminary results statement issued on 22 April.

Tesco is keeping Dobbies despite suggestions that Wyevale Garden Centres had been in negotiations to buy the 35-centre group.

The latest preliminary results from the supermarket chain shows plans to increase by 30,000 sqft Dobbies overall footprint by 27 February 2016, from 1,648,000 sqft to 1,676,000 sqft.

Dobbies added 10,000 sqft in the reporting period - Bar Hill in Cambridge.

Dobbies is 0.4 per cent of Tesco turnover and 1.5 per cent of group retail property size.

The results reported write-downs of property associated with halting new builds. They also detailed selling off Tesco's Blinkbox businesses, but not other subsidiaries such as Harris & Hoole or Dobbies.

The £6.4 billion loss announced by Tesco included a £116m write-down in goodwill and other impairments of UK businesses.  Some £83m related to Dobbies.
