Barry Town Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council commissioned Vale of Glamorgan landscape architects TDA Landscape Designs to create an accessible open space to act as a gateway to Green Flag site Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery.

It is hoped the new Cemetery Approach Gardens will also achieve Green Flag status.

Working as principal contractor, Ground Control construction manager Mark Stokes supervised work which included installation of a new road including drainage, paved laybys and ornate bollards, an avenue of trees with integrated cell planting system, large paved areas, stone benches, stone dust paths, fencing and all planting.

Construction manager Mark Stokes attended the official opening, joining representatives from Barry Town Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Meanwhile Ground Control-managed site, the National Maritime Museum became the first museum in the country to be awarded a Green Flag this year, one of a record 1797 awarded. Other sites cared for by the national contractor also retained their Green Flags, Croydon Cemetery for a seventh year and Southampton Solent University for a second.

Ground Control has been maintaining the National Maritime Museum since 2004, with a dedicated team on site, led by head gardener Scott Downton, as part of a contract with Royal Museums Greenwich, covering all elements of grounds maintenance across the 12 acre World Heritage site, surrounding the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House and Royal Observatory.

The Green Flag follows a number of other awards for horticulture at the museum, including a win at the BALI Awards and numerous London in Bloom Awards.

Ground Control has been maintaining Croydon Cemetery since November 2012, with a team of seven led by Dave Osborne. Operatives also offer help with bereavement services, providing assistance with burials and related matters.

Ground Control has been at Southampton Solent University’s since August 2015, receiving recognition with a Green Flag on the anniversary after the contract began.

Contract manager Peter Mountford said: "These awards are great testimony to the partnership we hold with these valued customers.  A Green Flag Award requires both input from the client and contractor to ensure a long term effective management plan is in place to protect our green spaces."
