They look the same to us. So, what's the difference? For starters the, 362 is a 59cc saw and the 391 is 64.1cc. The 362 is a powerful mid-range saw intended for use by professionals. It will appeal to foresters, forestry contractors and owners of small woodlands.

The 391, on the other hand, has high torque over a wide range of speeds and is an all-rounder for farmers felling and limbing, landscapers maintaining stands and occasional users cutting firewood.

Both look identical from the outside because they are built on the same platform, but the materials are different. The crankcase on the 362 is magnesium. On the 391, the crankcase is a polymer - lighter and less expensive.

But both have Stihl's 2-MIX engine. Vibration is low thanks to a professional A-V system. Couple this with a Rapid Micro Comfort chain and the 362 and 391 are extremely comfortable to use.

We took a range of new chainsaws to the Cannington Centre for Land-Based Studies at Bridgwater College in Somerset and asked tutors and trainees for their opinions.

We find out why Makita is confident its 4301 is going to be popular, look at the latest upgrades from Echo, try a Solo chainsaw for the first time and consider the advantages of the latest technology-packed Stihls and Husqvarnas. Conditions on the day were dry, warm and sunny.
