The only UK exhibitor attending Dutch trade show Plantarium has called for a similar national event to be held in the UK.
The Northern Liner Company of Preston attended the international nursery show in Boskoop on 24-27 August for the third time.
General manager John Billington said it is becoming an increasingly important event on the company’s show calendar: “It’s a good show for us and we predominantly come here to see our UK customers. Lots of UK and Irish buyers come here and we took quite a few orders in the first few days. People who come here from the UK seem to attend with the mindset of wanting to buy.
“I would love to see something like this in the UK — a high-quality national show, ideally held at the NEC in Birmingham. The UK trade show scene seems to be going down a more regionalised route. It is relatively cheap to take part in, but expensive in terms of time and effort.”
Billington praised Plantarium’s focus on plants: “That’s what people want to see and that’s what we want to sell. The flipside of coming here is we get to see what’s going on on the Continent – and grasses seem as popular as ever at the moment.
“I could have sold 20,000 of our Carex ‘Bowles Golden’ if I’d had the stock, the cultivar just doesn’t seem to be grown in Holland.”
