'Selling techniques key' says HEA president

Horticulture Exhibitors Association (HEA) president John Tilbury is attempting to encourage plants people to look more closely at their selling techniques and at what they do with their selling areas at shows to encourage customers to buy more plants.

A new £500 award at Harrogate Spring Flower Show was on offer to the best floral exhibitor and ran outside the show medal system. Harts, Roualeyn and Craig House were shortlisted at the first judging.

Tilbury said he hoped the awards will roll out to other events. He added: "Nowadays there is so much internet selling but people still like to touch, feel and talk."

Tilbury added that show growers were "maybe not taking the money they once did, or maybe they are not trying hard enough? That's the thing that we are trying to put across. It's easy to blame the organisation, but equally people have to ask 'is it me?'

A similar award ran for sundries sellers in 2015.

Horticulture Exhibitors Association representative Mike Clare said: "If someone is reading the paper when the judges go round, they won't get it."
