December was a strong month for garden retailing, particularly in garden centres, which saw a 10 per cent rise in sales over the last quarter compared to 2006. Year-on-year sales of rhododendrons and azaleas were up by 46 per cent and total sales were four times higher than those for December 2006. Sales of bedding plants were also strong, with December sales double those for the same month the previous year. Annual sales of climbers were 17 per cent above those in 2006. It was a quiet month for herbaceous perennials, but sales ended the year three per cent higher than in 2006. Consumer spend on roses was 20 per cent down on 2006, but sales were down only two per cent in garden centres. Despite strong December sales of pre-planted baskets and containers, they ended the year down 36 per cent.
