Sector expects Easter sales lift

Garden centres are predicting a record Easter, even if the weather lets them down.

HTA marketing director Andrew Maxted said: "Garden centres are benefiting from huge pent-up demand and even damp and cool weather will not slow them down. Good Friday and Easter Saturday are set to be record days."

Scotsdales managing director Caroline Owen said: "We've had a great start to April, with sales 45 per cent up on last year in the first weekend. The weather should come good by Saturday so we will certainly do better than last year."

Garden centres had a record March and the HTA reports a record month for National Garden Gift Vouchers, which were 60 per cent up on 2008.
