Seasonal sales down 14.3 per cent at B&Q

Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q, has announced surging sales at its trade outlet Screwfix but flatter returns from seasonal products.

Total sales at parent Kingfisher were £2.7 billion, +3.6 per cent like-for-like for the quarter to 30 April.

In the UK, sales were +1.2 per cent at £1.252 billion, like-for-like up +6.2 per cent benefiting from a supportive backdrop and continued strong Screwfix performance.

B&Q UK & Ireland sales were -4.3 per cent at £951m reflecting store closures. Like-for-like thet were +3.6 per cent including 1.9 per cent benefit from sales transference associated with store closures.

But like-for-like of seasonal was -14.3 per cent, while like-for-like of non-seasonal, including showroom was +7.3 per cent.

Kingfisher chief executive Veronique Laury said: "We have made a solid start to the year, trading in line with expectations.

"In addition, I am pleased with the early progress we are making on our operational milestones for this year, the first year of our ambitious five year plan. We continue to feel confident in our ability to deliver our plan, based on putting customer needs first, supported by the expertise and enthusiasm of our colleagues."
