Makita HTR4900

With this model's small 21cc engine and 49cm blade we expect our Escallonia hedge to beat it. But we are wrong. The 4900 is a monster in disguise. It has surprising power and is a favourite among our testers.

Efco TGS2750XP

A single-sided version of the TG machine, this model uses the same Euro 1-compliant, 25cc engine and shares many other features, including sound engineering, rugged construction and simplified starting.

Makita HTB7600

Boasting a 28cc engine and a long blade, big things are expected of this machine. We are not disappointed. This is a machine for tough conditions - and it's remarkably comfortable.

Stihl HS81 R C-E and HS81 T C-E

Both machines are powered by 22.7cc engines developing 0.7kW. Both are fitted with a 60cm double-sided blade, with optional blade-tip protection, and are packed with the sort of features you expect from Stihl.

Stihl HS86 R

A professional hedgecutter for commercial situations, the HS86 R has a compact engine and gear section - all nicely encased and protected.

Elephant's Trunk harness

You will either love or hate the Elephant's Trunk. It is designed to eliminate strain on the back, shoulder, neck and arm by, effectively, reducing the weight of any hedgetrimmer unit to just 1kg.

Echo HCR-161ES and HCR-331ES

Another Easy Start machine from the Echo stable, the 161 is fitted with an emission-compliant 21.2cc engine. It is fully mounted within a framework to reduce vibration down to 2.6m/s2 on the highest individual axis. The unit is equipped with a 62cm double-sided bar and weighs 5.5kg.

Makita HTR5600 and HTR7610

Both of these models are powered by a 24.5cc engine, but the 5600 has a 56cm double-sided double-reciprocating blade and the 7610 has a single-sided blade. We find that both machines cut through tough Escallonia hedging with ease.

Echo HCA-265ES

The "ES" stands for Easy Start, and we have no dispute with that. The "A" in the model name stands for Articulation.

Bargam truck-mounted sprayer

This week, we look at a machine designed to tackle pests and diseases quickly and accurately.
