Environment secretary endorses show moves to raise awareness of pest-and-disease control among gardening public.
Defra secretary of state Caroline Spelman will be at the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera's) Chelsea Flower Show display which will outline how the public can help prevent the spread of devastating plant pests and disease in gardens and the countryside.

Beech bark disease is most likely to attack trees with trunks that are more than 20cm in diameter, although it can also be a problem on young plantations. The disease occurs when heavy infestations of beech scale insect (Cryptococcus fagisuga) make enough feeding wounds in the bark to enable infection...
The Forestry Commission has advised people in west and south London, and Pangbourne in Berkshire, not to touch oak processionary caterpillars, which are emerging on oak trees in these areas.

The outbreak of the Asian longhorn beetle discovered at a farm in Kent has covered an area of at least 8ha and has infested at least 22 trees, the Food & Environment Research Agency (FERA) has confirmed.
