Horticulture students at Scotland's Rural College described lecturer Phil Lusby as a teacher who stands out and makes a difference, when they nominated him for the "Excellence in Teaching Award" he received during the SRUC graduation ceremony in the Bute Hall, University of Glasgow on 10 July.

The head of the School of Horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh is also a member of SRUC's Horticulture with Plantsmanship programme, where students picked him for the award of certificate and cash prize.

"Everyone learns in a different way," wrote one in the nomination. "Whether we learn best physically, visually or verbally Phil has ways to accommodate us all."

Introducing Lusby's award to SRUC students, parents and staff gathered in Bute Hall Professor David McKenzie, SRUC Vice Principal Education said:

"Teaching groups with a range of ages and backgrounds have recognised the impact Phil Lusby has in the delivering classes which are always inspirational. His enthusiastic approach to sharing his knowledge and experience ensures students are always on the move, looking that bit further to increase their own understanding."

"His classes are far from a breeze" remarked the students. "Feed-back is always positive and constructive and his door is never closed. We always look forward to his lectures."
