Sales of outdoor plants up on first half of 2014

Sales of outdoor plants are up by eight per cent compared with the first six months of 2014, as are houseplants, while sundries are four per cent up, according to latest Garden Centre Association (GCA) figures.

Almost all GCA centres have improved outdoor plant sales - the biggest category - while most are up in the second-biggest, sundries. Catering is nine per cent up while furniture and barbecues is 11.6 per cent up, including almost 10 per cent up in June.

In the smaller categories, clothing sales are up by 11 per cent, seeds and bulbs one per cent up, gifts and hard landscaping both four per cent up, farm shop five per cent up and pets and aquatics six per cent up.

Outdoor plants made up about 30 per cent of GCA members' sales in January to June, sundries 18 per cent and catering and furniture/barbecues 14 per cent each.
