Sainsbury's sets new fruit record

Sainsbury's has set a new record for the sales of apples and pears.

The supermarket has exceeded the previous highest sales volume by any retailer in a single season.

English Apple & Pears chief executive Adrian Barlow told Grower that it has beaten the previous record of 34,134 tonnes - achieved by Tesco in the 2007/08 season.

He said: "On 12 June Sainsbury's sales reached 34,150 tonnes to establish the new record and with a few weeks of the season remaining, their sales are likely to reach 34,500 tonnes."

He added: "This tremendous performance has been achieved as a result of very clear objectives and planning."

Barlow, meanwhile, has become vice president of the Fresh Produce Consortium's Council.

FPC president Nigel Jenney said he was delighted with Barlow's appointment and looked forward to working with him on crucial industry issues and to the ongoing support of council members of the executive team.
