Roundup addition receives German regulatory approval

Germany's regulatory authorities have approved the newest addition to the Roundup range for home gardeners following a review.

Monsanto commercial head of the international lawn & garden products Ralph Dyrnes said: "We are very conscious of our responsibility towards consumers. It took a lot of investment in research and development to create a product that is even more user-friendly than spray-bottle formulations. Roundup Gel was developed specifically for use by home gardeners," said Dyrnes.

Roundup products' active substance is glyphosate, which is under pressure in France after an announcement from the French environment minster that she wants to "be on the offensive with regards to the banning of pesticides" for sale in garden centres and other retailers following a report from health agency IARC.

German authorities have confirmed its safety evaluation in the context of a routine renewal of the permission to sell glyphosate-based weed killers in Europe.

Roundup Gel is available in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Great Britain and France and is expected to be available to German gardeners for the 2016 gardening season.

Roundup Gel UK unit sales are up 31 per cent versus the same period last year [GfK Panelmarket Hitlist Jan to May], while the market is down 1.4 per cent in units and -4.9 per cent in value.
