‘Risky’ play area needs funding

LDA Design is helping Southampton City Council to appeal for funding for a new play area that will encourage children to take risks.

The company has already drawn up a detailed design for the facility, named Spark Park, after artists’ practice Snug & Outdoor created the concept for the park. Inspired by the city’s coastal location, the design features ocean waves, ancient shipwrecks and desert islands threaded with streams and cascading waterfalls. It also features a range of sensory experiences such as a sound garden. LDA Design partner Neil Mattinson said: “Snug & Outdoor’s concept will result in a fun but beautiful play environment and will be a far cry from the usual risk-free play that fails to engage the imagination of a child. This park will have so much to offer to children if it gets funding.” LDA and Snug & Outdoor worked on the design with Southampton City Council, which needs to raise £1.6m to ensure the plans can become a reality.
