Blechnum brasiliense "Volcano" is a new selection made by Neil Alcock.
"Volcano" was selected as the brightest red form from a batch of spore-raised plants by Seiont Nurseries' Alcock in 2008.
It has been thoroughly tested through several west coast winters, where mature plants have survived temperatures down to -5 although frost-free conditions are recommended for the best yearly displays.
The young selection was sent to a large specialist fern propagator in Europe who has initiated it for future world-wide supply.
Seiont Nurseries has the first trade young plants for the UK and the trade launch will be at the HTA National Plant Show in June.
The first garden centre supply will be by Glendale through Coblands.
Blechnum "Volcano" has red new fronds which add colour and architectural statements as a stand-alone specimen and as part of a planting.
It will be made available to a wide range of retailers.
