RHS urges caution over tender plant sales during bank holiday

RHS chief horticultural advisor Guy Barter says it's too soon to buy and plant without protection tender plants this bank holiday weekend.

Barter said: "Where you can, keep frost off plants. Tender things can stay in garden centres until the weather warms up a bit.

"But if you can protect them, then there's no reason why not to.

"There's not much reason to clear away winter bedding and fruit will flower later so there is less risk of frost damage."

Poor weather is forecast over the bank holiday weekend.

The Met Office said: "Friday is remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain, along with further snow, mainly over hills. Showers locally heavy with hail and thunder. Sunny spells too. Breezy and staying cold.

"Sunshine and showers on Saturday. Rain and stronger winds will spread in from the northwest on Sunday, then will clear to blustery showers on Monday. It will become less cold."
