Retailers forced to turn down eager shoppers on Easter Sunday

Frustrated trader's phone ringing off the hook when forced to close due to regulations

Notcutts’ garden centre in Norwich was bombarded with phone calls from potential customers who wanted to see if it was open on Easter Sunday. Manager James Debbage said: “We had a skeleton staff in to get jobs done and the phone wouldn’t stop ringing. I had to unplug the phone in the end because it wouldn’t stop.” He added: “It makes little sense that we can only open for a six-day week instead of seven days just when we could benefit the most.” Director Tony Blake of Worcester-based St Peter’s Garden Centre said: “If we had been open, trade would have been substantial. If the legislation were to change, we would certainly open on Easter Sunday.” Alton Garden Centre reported 150 calls on Sunday while HTA retail management group chair Caroline Owen said: “There is clear consumer demand for Sunday opening.”
