Tal Goed Nurseries, near Glan Conwy in North Wales, said in a planning statement: "In order to address a declining financial viability and to inject value into the business, the proprietors have commissioned the production of plans to develop lodge accommodation on under-utilised land at Tal Goed.
"The intention is to further develop Tal Goed as a destination in its own right, offering a combination of leisure, leisure learning and more formal training and development provision on site that is ancillary to the current business.
"The lodge accommodation is also intended to address an identified need for quality accommodation that is complementary to tourist facilities in the wider Conwy area.
"Tal Goed has faced damaging competition from large supermarkets and garden centres providing customers with low cost no-specialist services.
"The business has lost sales to such outlets."
Meanwhile, Crookland garden centre in Dalton, Cumbria is set to close for a month while it undergoes a major £1m refurbishment. Crooklands will convert play and functions room back to retail and re-open in October.
