Cardiff-based Broxton & Moruzzi Landscaping are first to win a new Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award recognising excellence in landscape construction as RHS Flower Show Cardiff opens its gates for the weekend.

Winning contractor Broxton & Moruzzi built 'Hiraeth', a Show Garden designed by Melinda Thomas and Fleur Porter, which also picked up Gold and Best in Show. The RHS Best Construction Award has been introduced across all RHS shows this year.

Announcing the new award in January, RHS director-general Sue Biggs said contractors were "unsung heroes" who deserved more recognition for their contribution.

RHS judge Andrew Fisher Tomlin said: "The worthy winners of this new award demonstrated excellent attention to detail and finish and consistently score top marks for construction. I'm really looking forward to seeing the work of future winners of the RHS Best Construction Award."

Judging took place early this morning, with 19 Gold medals awarded to floral and garden exhibitors, the highest number of golds in recent years.

Devon-based Tale Valley Nursery won Gold and Best Exhibit in the Floral Marquee with their display of early spring-flowering shade-tolerant perennials, described by the judges as "a plantsman's paradise", while the New Design Award went to High Park Nursery.
