Restoration work at Biddulph Grange Gardens vandalised

Restoration work at Biddulph Grange Gardens in Staffordshire has been put back months after vandals left a trail of destruction.

They wrecked Victorian stonework, sent columns crashing into walls and hurled rare valuable artefacts into a lake during the wrecking spree at the Grade-I registered tourist attraction. The vandals systematically trashed the themed gardens, which date back to the 1840s, and even broke into a tunnel joining two gardens to steal its overhead lights. Biddulph Grange official Christine Belford said: "Anything that could break ended up being smashed." This included balustrades, urns and bells. The 60,000-visitors-a-year gardens will remain open as usual at weekends in November and December, and security is now being increased.
