Southwark Council put in a significant investment into the development of this national standard BMX track and received supported funding from British Cycling, the mayor of London’s office, London Marathon Charitable Trust, the council’s Cleaner Greener Safer programme, section 106 contributions and the Olympic Legacy Fund. The logistics of the site were very demanding — the programme revolved around the remediation process. It was adjacent to a park with pavements and highways used by the public that remained open throughout. Space became very restricted as significant amounts of large machinery were working and moving as works progressed. Finished works had to be protected whilst allowing assessment of unfinished areas.

Judges’ comments

"This scheme has transformed a totally derelict site in Peckham with associated antisocial behaviour into a vibrant community facility that is well used.

"Access to the site had to be controlled and security provided 24/7. All works, save for the installation of the specialist track surfacing, were completed by the contractor and to a very high standard, with clean material being spread and contoured above the barrier to meet the design requirements."
