Recent research by the charity Pond Conservation revealed that 80% of Britain's 500,000 ponds are in "poor" or "very poor" condition. But natural alternatives are available to help control algal blooms. Leeds-based Town End has developed 2 products to safely and effectively protect ponds from algae.
Dyofix Pond Black uses a blend of food colours that when mixed in to the pond, reflect Ultra Violet light away from the surface.
The product works by colouring the water black to prevent algae from photosynthesising.
It has no effect on surface plants and will last for several months.
Dyofix Pond Blue Liquid is also suitable for small ponds up to 400,000 litres.
Where Pod Black leaves a deep, mirror-like effect, Pond Blue Liquid leaves a hint of blue, allowing fish and aquatic life beneath the surface to be seen.

Dave Steward, Marketing Manager of Scotts Professional, adds the following comment:
"Just to point out that dichlobenil does not control nor is it registered to control algae. It is an aquatic herbicide and controls rooted submerged plants and has no effect on algae. Why mention dichlobenil at all in this article?"
The article has not been published with the full text of the press release and failed to mention that the products also work on rooted weeds, hence the reference to Dichlobenil.
