The Forestry Commission says that because of continued outbreaks of the disease along the Tall Trees Trail, removal of the remainder of Rhododendron is necessary and that this work will be carried out during November and December 2009.

A Defra representative said: "This, as well as continued surveillance, should help to ensure the long-term future of the trees on Rhinefield Drive."

A Forestry Commission representative said: "We currently have no reason to believe the tall trees are at risk, or that any of them are infected, but we will monitor the situation carefully. However, all infected rhododendron bushes, and others in the immediate vicinity, will have to be destroyed to get rid of the infection and prevent the organism from spreading."
